Allayne Forester-Langhorst
Allayne decided in high school that she wanted to be a stewardess on the then new passenger airplanes. In the 1930's a stewardess had to be a nurse. So after mom graduated from East Liverpool High School on June 2, 1939, she went to East Liverpool City Hospital's School of Nursing, where she graduated in 1942 from the "Victory Class" with a Registered Nurse license. She worked at that hospital as a general duty nurse on the maternity floor until September 15, 1943, when she enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps to serve her country in the WWII as a flight nurse.
After Basic Training and duty at Langley Field in Virginia, Allayne was transferred in February, 1944, to the Station Hospital at Camp Kearns, Utah. In June, she was transferred to Bowman Field in Kentucky for an 8 week air evacuation course, from which she graduated on July 29, 1944. She reported back to Camp Kearns, Utah in January 1945 and then was transferred to Ft. Mason and Hamilton Field, California before leaving on March 12th for a "secret destination." She arrived at the Clark Field Hospital in the Philippines on April 13, 1945 after a month on ship crossing the Pacific Ocean during the height of the war with Japan. She served with the 804th Med Air Evacuation Squadron and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on July 28, 1945. As a flight nurse, she tended wounded soldiers from the point of evacuation to the hospital at Clark Field. It was noted in her separation papers that no doctor was on these flights.
Allayne met 1st Lieutenant Bud Langhorst, fighter pilot, shortly after her arrival at Clark Field. They quickly fell in love and married on August 5, 1945. The honeymoon was short and sweet on base because Bud got sick with Dengue Fever and as soon as he recovered in hospital, he was sent home to the States for discharge. Allayne still had time to serve before she could be discharged, so she arrived in Atsugi Airdrome, Honshu, Japan, on September 10, 1945 for occupation. She was sent to Tachikawa Army Air Base. But in October, 1945, she was flown to the States for discharge because she and the Air Corps learned she was pregnant. Allayne was discharged from the Army Air Corps on November 30, 1945.
