Legendary television producer
Norman Lear was just 20 when
he enlisted in the Army Air
Force, shortly after the attack
on Pearl Harbor. Lear served in
the Mediterranean theater as a
radio operator and gunner on
B-17 Flying Fortress bombers
with the 463rd Bomb Group in
Italy, flying 52 combat missions
over continetnal Europe. "I
wasn't a hero, I was just doing
my job," said Lear shortly before
passing.Â
