On January 11, 1963 he was a passenger on the US Army helicopter CH-21C #56-04220 from the 57th Transportation Company. They crashed during the early evening hours on a small island just south of Ben Tre when their aircraft lost the lateral control mechanism. Medical reports from the scene indicate all seven members aboard the aircraft died instantly.
