   Received Purple Heart

   Served in the U S Navy World War II

   He was a welder and Served on the Altair,a repair ship,    docked at Trinidad 1943. He served on the Miantanomah when she hit a German mine in the Port of LeHave, France.   He was one of 96 men that survived.

   He also served on the Vulcan in the South Pacific.  He was discharged from her when the war ended and was the first ship load of sailors to come back from Japan when the war ended.  They landed at Long Beach, California and came across country by train.   His wife writes that they were met at stops along the way with bands playing and women bringing flowers and refreshments.
