Eleanor Grace Alexander was born on September 18, 1940, in New York. She joined the Army Nurse Corps in May 1967 and reached the rank of Captain. After finishing basic training at Brooke Army Medical Center, she was sent to the 85th Evacuation Hospital in Qui Nhon, Vietnam, in June 1967. Eleanor died on November 30. 1967. She was on a transport plane with 26 other people when it crashed three miles from their base. She is the only woman from New Jersey to be killed in action. The town of River Vale created a park to honor her.
