John Basilone had already received a Medal of Honor for heroism at Guadalcanal and was stateside on a war bond tour when he begged Marine brass to send him back to the Pacific. "I need to be with my boys," he pleaded. He was killed on the first day of Iwo Jima and received the Navy Cross.
